Why Revival TarriesLeonard Ravenhill

In my own words.

Things I’ve said from a pulpit or scribbled in a margin. A couple are Kailee’s, and marked.

Many like being part of Christianity. Few like being a part of Christ.
Money does not define you. What you do with it does.
We would rather stay in and make a name for ourselves than go out and make a name for Christ.
Kailee
Live in the present. Plan for the future. Learn from the past.
Highly favored by God seldom means you’ll be highly favored by man.
The greatest hindrance that came out of Reformed doctrine is not its soteriology but its cessationism.
The Bible gives the principle. The Holy Spirit gives the practical.
When you’re complimenting someone’s ministry and the name “Jesus” never comes up, you’ve missed the point.
None of the Bible was written to us. All of the Bible was written for us.
The things of this earth should be used as means to fulfill the Father’s mission, not the means to fulfill our desires.
Salvation does not come from a prayer. It comes from a Person.
Your behavior exposes your beliefs.
Scripture is a suicide weapon, not a murder weapon.
If love covers a multitude of sins, then nostalgia covers more.
A group of people who believe in a final judgment, an afterlife, and a holy God are a dangerous people to any government.
Christianity becomes one of the most dangerous things in the world when nobody is allowed to lovingly help you see when you’re struggling.
Kailee
God gave Israel the king they wanted to show them the King they needed.
Often the person who moves the rug gets blamed for the dirt that’s under it. Blame the people who put the dirt there, and don’t be afraid to uncover it even if it means you get treated wrongly.
Personal discipline should not overtake personal responsibility. Adapting disciplines to the neglect of responsibilities is misplaced priorities.
Approach Scripture with a desire to learn, not a dogma to prove.
Red Sea moments only come after you leave Egypt.
A church should be an organism, not an organization. But it should still be organized. That should lead to growth and reproduction.
Biblical qualifications have been replaced by personal desires. Personal preferences cover a multitude of biblical qualifications.
A poor disposition undermines a good position.
We have liberty, not to lawlessness, but to obedience.
Your favor from the Father comes from your position, not your performance.
Often our adherence to and reading of Scripture is about being the most righteous among other men, when it’s supposed to be about being righteous before God.
Often those closest to the light get blinded or burnt by it.

Commonplace book.

Lines I’ve underlined, mostly from the shelf above. 98 and counting.

If we think of the Holy Spirit only as an impersonal power or influence, then our thought will constantly be, how can I get hold of and use the Holy Spirit; but if we think of Him in the Biblical way as a divine Person, infinitely wise, infinitely holy, infinitely tender, then our thought will constantly be, how can the Holy Spirit get hold of and use me?
R.A. Torrey · The Fundamentals, Vol. VII
Hell is the truth seen too late.
Cecil · The Fundamentals, Vol. VIII
The priests and false prophets peddled enough experience to make them happy but not enough truth to make them holy.
Warren W. Wiersbe · The Integrity Crisis
The penalty for rejecting truth is accepting lies.
Warren W. Wiersbe · The Integrity Crisis
Organizations, establishments, and entities have rules. Relationships don’t have rules.
The winning of individuals by individuals in personal conversation is the main way to win souls.
John R. Rice · The Golden Path to Personal Soul Winning
Every lost sinner is called to be saved. As soon as he is saved he is called to win souls.
John R. Rice · The Golden Path to Personal Soul Winning
It is often harder to make a soul winner out of a Christian than to make a Christian out of a sinner.
John R. Rice · The Golden Path to Personal Soul Winning
You can’t catch fish without fishing. You can’t win souls without soul winning.
John R. Rice · The Golden Path to Personal Soul Winning
Going is the main part of soul winning.
John R. Rice · The Golden Path to Personal Soul Winning
The economy of God never has a harvest problem. Always a labor problem.
R.B. Ouellette
The opportunity is large. The outreach is limited.
R.B. Ouellette
Short devotions are the bane of deep piety.
E.M. Bounds
You may lose all of your use; you will never lose any of your value.
Max Lucado · The Applause of Heaven
Shall man be proud, after God has been humble?
Richard Sibbes · The Bruised Reed
What seems impossible is achievable through good leadership.
Jocko Willink & Leif Babin · Extreme Ownership
When it comes to performance standards, it’s not what you preach, it’s what you tolerate.
Jocko Willink & Leif Babin · Extreme Ownership
Only by walking in dependence on the Spirit, that is, letting the Spirit have full control, can the Christian ever hope to make the progress that is consonant with his profession.
Charles C. Ryrie · The Holy Spirit
Most people have a desire to look for the exception instead of the desire to become exceptional.
John C. Maxwell · Developing the Leader Within You
What people need is not a motto to say, but a model to see.
John C. Maxwell · Developing the Leader Within You
Too many people are ready to assert their rights, but not assume their responsibilities.
John C. Maxwell · Developing the Leader Within You
We cannot lead anyone else farther than we have been ourselves.
John C. Maxwell · Developing the Leader Within You
Faith is not just the beginning of the Christian life; it is the means by which we obtain everything we need from God.
Jerod Long · God’s Heart for Healing
Worship is not singing. Worship is obedience.
Tim Dilena · Times Square Church
Any time you find somebody in need, if you can help them, you should.
Jerod Long · God’s Heart for Healing
The solution to abuse is not disuse, but proper use.
Sam Storms · The Beginner’s Guide to Spiritual Gifts
Obstacles are conditions to success.
John C. Maxwell · Developing the Leader Within You

John C. Maxwell · Developing the Leader Within You
Cherish your visions and dreams, as they are the children of your soul: the blueprints of your ultimate achievements.
Napoleon Hill
If you understand what motivates people, you have at your command the most powerful tool for dealing with them.
John C. Maxwell · Developing the Leader Within You
It is a difficult task to admonish Christians who are not living in the will of God and then face their resistance and criticism.
Gene A. Getz · Elders and Leaders
Faulty interpretations can lead to unrealistic expectations that can cause us to “change the rules” in order to function within our own reality.
Gene A. Getz · Elders and Leaders
God wants believers in various cultural settings to be able to create a multiple leadership plan that will function effectively regardless of whether we live in the first century or the twenty-first.
Gene A. Getz · Elders and Leaders
To delegate responsibilities to people who are not qualified spiritually will not “lighten the load” for spiritual leaders. Rather, it will only complicate their ministry.
Gene A. Getz · Elders and Leaders
God has for you blessings you have never claimed, power you have never used, an enduement you have never sought and found.
John R. Rice · The Power of Pentecost
Para-church organizations, such as seminaries, mission agencies, Christian counseling agencies, and evangelistic ministries, have risen to accomplish so much of what God intended the Church to do.
Neil Cole · Organic Church
We expect people to come to church in order to come to Christ, and the people of the world want nothing to do with church.
Neil Cole · Organic Church
We should not be running from the drug dealers and darkness. If indeed we are really the light of the world, we should be running toward the darkness with the understanding that we cannot be overcome by darkness.
Neil Cole · Organic Church
Our greatest significance is found in the darkness, not in the light.
Neil Cole · Organic Church
If Jesus is missing in our understanding of church, He will likely be missing in our expression of church as well.
Neil Cole · Organic Church
In many churches in the West, ministry is done for Jesus, but not by Jesus, and therein lies a big difference.
Neil Cole · Organic Church
What we draw them with is what we draw them to. If they come expecting to be entertained, we had better entertain them if we want to keep them coming back every week.
Neil Cole · Organic Church
It is my opinion that thousands would escape from slavery who now remain, but for the strong cords of affection that bind them to their friends.
Frederick Douglass · Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
God’s design for taking the gospel to the world is a slow, intentional, simple process that involves every one of his people sacrificing every facet of their lives to multiply the life of Christ in others.
David Platt · Radical
Jesus never intended to be one voice among many counseling us on how to lead our lives and use our money. He always intends to be the voice that guides whatever decisions we make in our lives and with our money.
David Platt · Radical
Honoring traditions made the Pharisees feel like they were obeying God when they actually weren’t.
Francis Chan · Letters to the Church
If we focus too much of our attention on what people want, we will only increase the amount of complaining. The more we try to fulfill their desires, the more they complain when their desires are not met.
Francis Chan · Letters to the Church
Too often, we give people what they ask for rather than what they need.
Francis Chan · Letters to the Church
By catering our worship to the worshippers and not the Object of our worship, I fear we have created human-centered churches.
Francis Chan · Letters to the Church
You can’t shape the life of your church around who might leave if things start to feel too much like the New Testament.
Francis Chan · Letters to the Church
The Church’s purpose is not to exist. It’s to produce. Are we producing mature disciples who imitate Christ by constantly serving others?
Francis Chan · Letters to the Church
In so many churches, the mission of the church has actually become the maintenance of the institution itself.
Alan Hirsch · quoted in Letters to the Church
We might find that the things we added to improve our churches are the very things that crowd God out.
Francis Chan · Letters to the Church
Going small is our best shot at getting big.
Francis Chan · Letters to the Church
If we don’t change the direction we’re going, we are likely to end up where we’re headed.
Lao Tzu · quoted in Change Your World
The assumptions we make often restrict our thinking and therefore restrict our possibilities.
John C. Maxwell · Change Your World
To love the whole world for me is no chore; my only real problem’s my neighbor next door.
C.W. Vanderbergh · quoted in Change Your World
The heavy responsibility of earning a living, disciplining children, winning the family to Christ, of religious instruction in the home and the family: these heaviest burdens ought to fall heaviest on the husband’s shoulders. The man who shirks and avoids such responsibilities, leaving them for the weaker partner, sins before God and will have his prayers hindered.
John R. Rice · Prayer: Asking and Receiving
The real difference between New Testament churches and the churches of today, between New Testament preachers and the preachers of today, between New Testament Christians and the Christians of today, is in the matter of prayer, and the power that comes through prayer.
John R. Rice · Prayer: Asking and Receiving
Even antiquity is not authority, but may be only the old age of error. What radical reforms would be made in modern worship, teaching, and practice if the one final criterion of all judgment were: “What do the Scriptures teach?”
George Müller · George Müller of Bristol
To learn the will of God before undertaking anything, and to wait till it is clear, because only so can one either be blessed in his own soul or prospered in the work of his hands.
George Müller · George Müller of Bristol
The impulse of a converted soul is to love, and not to be getting up and complaining of every one else and finding fault.
D.L. Moody
God is not a hard taskmaster, and in later years I have learned that to do your best work you cannot afford to neglect the common laws of health.
D.L. Moody
God will never act contrary to His nature.
Henry Blackaby · Experiencing God
If you are worn out or stressed by your “Christian duties,” perhaps you are not properly yoked to your Master.
Henry Blackaby · Experiencing God
God is far more interested in a love relationship with you than He is in what you do for Him. His desire is for you to love Him.
Henry Blackaby · Experiencing God
God will always work in you before He works through you.
Henry Blackaby · Experiencing God
God is not primarily calling you to a task but to a relationship.
Henry Blackaby · Experiencing God
The depth of revival will be determined always by the depth of the spirit of repentance.
Frank Bartleman · Azusa Street
An empty altar receives no fire.
Frank Bartleman · Azusa Street
When you make a commitment, you create hope. When you keep a commitment, you create trust.
John C. Maxwell · Everyone Communicates, Few Connect
To be persuasive we must be believable; to be believable we must be credible; to be credible we must be truthful.
John C. Maxwell · Everyone Communicates, Few Connect
More battles are lost by loss of hope than loss of blood.
Napoleon
Great communication can meet multiple audiences where they are.
Tim Mackie
It’s easy to despise what you can’t get.
Chip & Dan Heath · Made to Stick
Prayer governs conduct and conduct makes character.
E.M. Bounds
There are three classes of people: those who are afraid, those who don’t know enough to be afraid, and those who know their Bible.
Leonard Ravenhill · Why Revival Tarries
Never underestimate your capacity to be deceived.
Sam Storms
When we do not experience the truths expressed in Scripture, it is our experience that is in question, not the Bible.
Henry Blackaby · Hearing God’s Voice
The test of doctrine is purity of conduct.
P.B. Fitzwater · Preaching and Teaching the New Testament
Let us not be deluded with the idea that the golden age is to be ushered in through the agencies of the present enterprises of men.
P.B. Fitzwater · Preaching and Teaching the New Testament
God does not need you to compromise your integrity to accomplish His work.
Henry Blackaby · Hearing God’s Voice
Our beleaguered age stands in need, not so much of ten-talented men as God-conquered commoners.
Richard Ellsworth Day · Bush Aglow: The Life of D.L. Moody
They made me keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.
Song of Solomon 1:6 · quoted in Bush Aglow
It’s amazing how quickly the brush grows over the path.
Ted Doll
Fasting prepares the way for God to give you fresh revelation, fresh vision, and clear purpose.
Jentezen Franklin · Fasting
Wherever God’s people are and God’s purposes are being worked out, that is where the spiritual battle will be most intense.
Derek Prince · Spiritual Warfare
When a scientist says something good about the Bible, it doesn’t make me trust the Bible more; it makes me trust the scientist more.
Adrian Rogers · The Word of God (sermon)
God seems attracted to our weakness, because weakness creates space for His power.
Jerod Long
They were divided into various tribes, and to so great an extent were they swayed by rivalry and faction that two or three tribes would hardly unite to ward off a common danger. Fighting singly, the tribes were conquered successively.
The Church of Scotland, Vol. 1 · on the ancient Scottish tribes
Prayer becomes desirable when our view of the Father becomes biblical.
